Ontario Cracking Down on Crime in Cornwall

Province protecting local communities with proceeds seized from criminals

NEWS

CORNWALL — The Ontario government is fighting back against crime in Cornwall by investing $301,615 in crime prevention initiatives. The funds, forfeited to the province as proceeds of crime following criminal prosecutions, will be used to support community safety projects by Cornwall Police Service.

“I am pleased to hear that the Cornwall Police Service is receiving $301,615 over 3 years to help with organized crime and hate crimes,” said Nolan Quinn, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. “Ensuring police services have the resources to keep their communities safe from crime and hate motivated incidents. I extend my congratulations to CPS on receiving this grant.”

Since 2018, Ontario has invested more than $16 million in crime prevention initiatives across the province through the Proceeds of Crime Front-Line Policing (POC-FLP) Grant program. Funding through the POC-FLP will help Cornwall Police Service with Knowledge First – a project aimed to disrupt and suppress organized crime and hate motivated incidents.

“We’re using every tool including cash and proceeds seized from criminals to prevent crime and protect our communities,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “Thanks to the hard work of our men and women in uniform, these funds are being reinvested back into communities to help support victims, educate youth and increase awareness about crimes such as gang violence and hate.”

“The Cornwall Police Service greatly appreciates receiving this funding through the Proceeds of Crime Front-Line Policing Grant,” said Chief of Police Shawna Spowart. “We are extremely grateful to MPP Quinn and Solicitor General Kerzner for helping us keep our community safe.”

To date, the POC-FLP Grant program has funded 281 community safety projects across the province.
